Level Up Your Life Drawing at Westbury Arts Centre

Have you ever wanted to draw the human figure but felt unsure where to start—or stuck in a rut? You’re not alone. Life drawing can be challenging, but with the right structure and support, it becomes not only easier but incredibly rewarding.

Why Life Drawing Matters

Strong drawing skills are a powerful foundation for any artist. In today’s fast-paced digital world, traditional skills like life drawing are often overlooked—but they remain essential. While self-teaching is possible, it’s often a slower, more frustrating path. Learning from an experienced tutor can accelerate your progress and deepen your understanding.

The Secret to Progress: Structure and Smart Practice

Like music, sports, or any craft, mastering life drawing requires structure. It’s about taking the right steps in the right order, building habits, and practicing with purpose. Our courses are designed to help you do just that.

Let’s bust a few common myths:

  • “I shouldn’t go back to basics.”Actually, revisiting the fundamentals often reveals new insights. Simplicity is the hallmark of mastery.

  • “Practice is all I need.”Practice is vital—but without study, analysis, and experimentation, it can lead to stagnation.

  • “I can do it on my own.”You can—but learning in a group offers fresh perspectives, shared experiences, and valuable feedback.

  • “I need to find my style first.”Your style is already within you. What you need to develop are your eyes, hands, and understanding.

A Structured Path to Artistic Growth

Our life drawing programme is built around three five-week courses, each offering two-hour sessions with live models. Every session begins with a short discussion to set the focus, and you’ll receive written summaries and practice assignments to reinforce your learning.

Each five-week term is designed to help you build a consistent drawing habit—perfect for developing long-term skills.

Course 1: Line and Gesture

Start here! Learn how to create expressive, simplified drawings that capture the essence of the human form. Explore different materials, master gesture drawing, and begin to understand body proportions, basic shapes, and key anatomical landmarks.

Course 2: Basic Anatomy

An essential step for any serious artist. This course helps you understand the structure beneath the surface—bones, muscles, and how they move. Using 3D models and live references, you’ll gain the knowledge to draw with confidence and accuracy.

Course 3: Rendering

Bring your drawings to life with light and shadow. This slower-paced course focuses on building form and realism through techniques like crosshatching and charcoal. You’ll work on longer poses and develop patience, precision, and a deeper understanding of how light shapes the body.

These courses can be repeated and cycled through, allowing you to deepen your skills and grow at your own pace.

Why Invest in Yourself?

Investing in your artistic development is one of the most rewarding choices you can make. These courses offer exceptional value—just slightly more than untutored sessions, but with expert guidance, structure, and support to help you truly thrive.
