COURSE/WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Join artist Alondene Phillips for a five‑week journey into experimental printmaking. This hands‑on course introduces you to a range of print processes and encourages playful exploration, thoughtful image‑making, and creative risk‑taking. Whether you're new to printmaking or looking to deepen your practice, you’ll work closely with Alondene to develop your own imagery across multiple techniques, comparing how each process transforms your ideas. What to Bring Please come with ideas, drawings, sketchbook work, photos, or images you’d like to develop. We’ll be working at A5–A6 scale, allowing you to complete prints within the course timeframe and work comfortably with the available press. To get the most from the sessions, we recommend choosing one or two images to explore throughout the course. Reworking the same imagery across different processes will help you: 1. Understand how each technique shapes your visual language 2. Experiment with layering, combining, and overlapping methods 3. Build depth, texture, and colour in your prints Course Overview Relief Printmaking — Lino Cutting (Weeks 1–2 ) Learn the foundations of relief printing through lino cutting. You’ll carve your design into a lino block, ink it, and print it using the press. Includes: Cutting techniques Inking and printing Registration methods for accurate multi‑layer prints Intaglio Printmaking with an Acrylic Matrix (Weeks 2–3 ) Explore intaglio processes using an acrylic plate as your matrix. You’ll incise, scrape, and texture the surface to create rich, detailed prints. Includes: Intaglio plate preparation Inking and wiping techniques Monoprinting using the acrylic matrix Collograph — Mixed Media Plate Making (Weeks 3–4) Create a textured, mixed‑media collograph plate using found materials, adhesives, and mark‑making tools. This process offers endless possibilities for surface, tone, and experimentation. Open Studio: Combine, Layer, Experiment (Weeks 4–5 ) Bring everything together. Use any of the three techniques—or combine them—to develop a final series of prints. This is your space to play, refine, and push your ideas further. What Is a Matrix? A matrix is the physical surface used to hold ink and transfer an image to paper. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Enjoy complimentary teas and coffees on site. LOCATION: This workshop will take place in the Legge Room situated on the ground floor. Accessible parking spaces are available to anyone who requires them.
