COURSE/WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP SUITABLE FOR? Suitable for those with some basic drawing skills who want to learn how, or anyone who wishes to improve and develop their portrait painting. This course is for adults 18+ ABOUT THE COURSE: The aim of this exciting Portrait course is to give students opportunity to focus on some of the key challenges faced when painting a portrait. This will involve covering a variety of techniques that are common to portrait painting. These include: - Structure of the head - Placing and accurately depicting features - Creating a likeness - The importance of tonal and temperature values - Expression, feeling and further development. The course has been designed primarily with charcoal drawing and oil painting in mind. However if you have more comfortable in other mediums you are more than welcome to use these. The tutor will demonstrate ideas and techniques and is on hand to give one on one help. ABOUT THE TUTOR: Matt Waruszynski is an oil painter specialising in figurative work and portraits. He is interested in exploring how the body and face tell the story of our lives. Our body keeps the score of all of our traumas, joys, struggles and triumphs and he seeks to use painting and drawing as a way to understand and tell these stories. He also fascinated by the materiality of paint which he likes to apply paint thickly in an impasto style and sees his method as sculpting with paint. With a background in animation, he is drawn to fast, energetic marks to give a sense of life and movement in his work. He was won the Sir Philip Trousdell Prize for Portraiture and was a recent finalist in Raw Umber Studio Image Prize.
