Getting hooked on Calligraphy….

Updated: Jun 27

Becca White took the 5-week Calligraphy and Flourishing course at Westbury Arts Centre four times, as she enjoyed it so much. She is already using her new skills to create her own greetings cards and has been called upon at her workplace to create signage.

Becca’s daily commute to her job as a medical librarian at Imperial College London meant that Sunday classes were the most convenient for her.

Becca had studied Art to ‘A’ Level at school and had undertaken occasional art and craft workshops but had not, up to now, committed to a course over a number of weeks.

Becca says of her decision to take this course: “I have always been intrigued by calligraphy and keen to give it a go as I thought, at the very least, it would enhance my birthday and Christmas cards.”

Becca found that the course was more than just learning calligraphy. The tutor, Christina Janoszka, regularly demonstrated different techniques with different mediums and gave the group the chance to experiment.  “I appreciated Christina’s patience, encouragement and talent.  Every week she’d have our workstations set up, ready to go, with all that we needed for the lesson. She provided us with detailed worksheets covering the steps to creating letters and, later on, flourishes. She brought in examples of her own work to show us what we could do with our new skill, or at least aspire to. I found she was a great source of knowledge and advice on what to buy and where to buy it – drawing on her own wealth of experience and saving us from spending money on unnecessary equipment.”

Becca said: “I enjoyed looking back at my work as the weeks progressed and seeing the progress I had made. This was the first course I had taken at Westbury and it encouraged me to seek out further new crafting opportunities. I have since taken a paper decorations workshop at Westbury Arts Centre and paper cutting and quilling paper art workshops to further enhance my greeting cards.”

Talking about what she enjoyed of her experience, Becca enthused: “I really appreciated the chance to switch off and fully focus on learning a new skill.  The calming environment which the tutor created in her lessons and the peaceful, relaxing atmosphere of Westbury enhanced this experience.”

Becca said that she would 100% recommend the course.  “The fact that the course is run in 5-week blocks means that it is not a long-term commitment … though be warned, you’ll get hooked and keep rebooking like I did.”
