COURSE/WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

This course offers a supportive environment for beginners and for those wishing to expand their existing practice. Over 5 weeks, you will explore three core processes, the basics of lino cutting and printing using hand tools and a mini press, moving on to the development of a key block to create multicolour prints and lastly understanding registration techniques, learning how to develop a registration board and how a variety of registration techniques can be used to produce a series of prints. This is an opportunity to develop your lino cutting skills and explore the use of colour in your prints experimenting with overlaying prints to build colour and depth as you develop your own designs and imagery. The emphasis is on exploration, testing ideas, and building confidence with tools, materials, and methods. What you will learn: Multiple colour lino printing using a key block Creating and carving lino blocks Registering prints accurately Preparing your paper for printing Understanding, mixing, and applying inks Combining and overlaying techniques to enhance depth, colour, and texture Weeks 1-2: Relief printmaking (linocut) -There will be a focus on the preparation of lino media, developing cutting styles and skills and understanding of how to work with positive and negative space to develop designs, lines, textures, and patterns. We will review the work and techniques of a few leading lino cut artists. Weeks 2-3: Multi Colour Printing. Students learn about the process of multicolour printing through the creation of a key block in wk3. Weeks 4-5: Registration Techniques (wk4)students will learn about a variety of possible registration techniques from registration board to Ternes Burton pins and will create their own registration board to run a small series of colour prints in wk5. What to bring Drawings, photos or reference images to work from. Work will be created at A5/A6 to ensure pieces can be completed within the course timeframe and fit the press. What's included Two pieces of A5 lino (either soft cut or traditional lino) Additional lino can be purchased at £1 per A5 sheet. Tracing paper to transfer images. Mount board /Glue/ Masking Tape and sealant to create a registration board Using mini presses, spoons, and barens to print plates Learning to create a simple registration board Printing on standard cartridge paper LOCATION: This workshop will take place in Studio 15 situated on the ground floor.
