COURSE/WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

This immersive ceramic workshop offers adults the rare opportunity to work closely with expert artist‑tutor Andrew Macdermott. Across consecutive days, participants are invited to explore clay in a responsive, hands‑on way, developing work that can range from intimate small‑scale pieces to ambitious larger sculptural forms. Working with high‑quality stoneware clay, participants will be guided through a range of forming, shaping and sculpting techniques, with Andrew providing tailored support, demonstrations and professional insight throughout. The multi‑day structure of the workshop allows participants to return to their pieces as the clay evolves, responding to changes in texture and moisture in real time, a process that encourages experimentation, refinement and a more intuitive relationship with the material. With specialist tools available and expert guidance always on hand, participants can push their creative boundaries, explore new sculptural possibilities and develop a deeper understanding of ceramic practice. Set within the inspiring historic surroundings of Westbury Arts Centre, this workshop offers a rich, focused and creatively expansive experience for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the art of clay. The tactile, grounding nature of clay sparked an instant connection, revealing a creative path that felt both absorbing and deeply meaningful. With a background in community development, it was a natural step to combine a love of working with people with this emerging craft. Today, Andrew delivers hands‑on pottery workshops across Milton Keynes and beyond, using clay as a way to bring people together, inspire creativity, and encourage self‑expression. In his home studio he created handcrafted ceramic pieces influenced by the natural world.
