About the Event

Occupied since Roman times, and the site of a Saxon burial, Westbury enters the historical record

before the Norman Invasion when a Queen’s lover occupied the manor house here. Given to a Norman

Knight after the Conquest it was expanded into a moated manor with a major rebuild in 1670, featuring

a famous door most probably salvaged from the Spanish Armada.


Becoming a tenanted farm in the 17th and 18th Centuries, Westbury became a feature of the Hunting

landscape of Whaddon Chase. After a brief period as a private residence the New Town bought the
