About the Event

Students will use wet into wet and wet into dry techniques, limiting the layers and using lively direct brushwork to keep watercolour fresh and signing from the page. Gain a better understanding of colour mixing and using a limited palette to avoid dull muddied colours, learn how to mix and use various shades of greens and different tones, strengths and consistencies of colour to bring lightness, harmony and a sense of space and distance to your artworks.

Through demos and one to one guidance and support Nicky will show the stages of a painting using traditional watercolour techniques in a contemporary way to create fresh artworks and helps you to do the same whilst progressing your painting skills.

You can transfer the tips and knowledge Nicky offers to many other subject matters in watercolour and other mediums particularly what you learn about tone, colour, composition and creating artworks that sing from the page.

This workshop is not appropriate for absolute beginners. Please see other options Westbury Art Centre has to offer if you have no painting experience and wish to try something for beginners before progressing to mixed level workshops with Nicky.

Nicky Hunter is a full time artist  specialising in watercolours, she hosts regular painting workshops at Westbury Arts Centre where her studio is based.

She enjoys helping her students’  progress and master the magical yet challenging medium of watercolour. She exhibits her artworks nationally and is a sought-after guest tutor for  art schools and art societies throughout the UK.

Nicky uses traditional watercolour methods with a contemporary flair to paint representational artworks in a loose style. Her specialism is florals, but she also paints and teaches other genres such as; animals and landscapes. Her work is mainly inspired by nature and ignited by colour; exploring light and   transparency and dancing brushwork and clarity of application of paint are important elements of her artwork.

She has many years’ experience teaching watercolours which developed after a 20 year career as a textile designer; painting and illustrating printed fabric collections for well-known UK brands and creating embroidery designs for film and TV and prints for fashion design houses across the globe.
