Abstracting the Landscape: A One-Day Painting Workshop

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

This one-day workshop explores how to create expressive, contemporary landscape paintings by moving beyond literal representation and responding to the atmosphere, mood and feeling of a place.

The workshop aims to help participants loosen their approach to landscape painting and develop greater confidence in using colour, tone, composition, mark-making and texture to create a sense of space and atmosphere.

Helen Simms will demonstrate her approach to abstracting the landscape, sharing practical techniques and insights from her own painting practice. Participants will then work through a series of guided exercises before developing their own landscape painting from photographic reference.

The emphasis is on experimentation, personal expression and responding intuitively to the landscape, rather than creating a technically perfect or realistic representation. Participants will be encouraged to make confident decisions, experiment with mark-making and embrace the unexpected qualities of the painting process.
