COURSE/WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

During this 2 day workshop, participants will have the opportunity to delve into the world of portraiture through a series of practical demonstrations and exercises. This course has been designed with both beginners and more experienced artists in mind and will give students the opportunity to learn and develop foundation skills as well as explore other more expressive areas of portraiture. Over two days we will work directly from 3 different live models and will include shorter timed exercises as well as longer poses where the focus will be on developing a more structured and harmonious study. Day 1 AM: A series of quicker exercises aimed at understanding the structure of the head and proportions. PM: A focus on understanding values and how they work within portraiture We will end the day starting a longer piece. Day 2 AM: We will resume the same painting from the previous day. Since the paint will have dried a little we will look to develop this pose further and by examining key relationships. PM: We will work on a quicker painting with more of an emphasis on expression, colour and feeling. THE TUTOR: Matt Waruszynski is interested in exploring how the body and face tell the story of our lives. Our body keeps the score of all of our traumas, joys, struggles and triumphs and he seeks to use painting and drawing as a way to understand and tell these stories. He also fascinated by the materiality of paint which he likes to apply paint thickly in an impasto style and sees his method as sculpting with paint. He was won the Sir Philip Trousdell Prize for Portraiture. https://www.mw-artist.com/ https://www.instagram.com/mattw_art TO BRING: A3 drawing pad, soft drawing pencils (such as 3B and 6B), willow Charcoal, compressed charcoal/ charcoal pencil, blending stick, putty & regular rubber. Paints (essential): Titanium White, Ivory Black, yellow ochre, cadmium red Paints (good to have): Lemon Yellow, Cadium Yellow, Alizarian Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Burnt Umber. Brushes: 2-3 bristle brushes varying from 1/2 cm up to 3cm wide. Hogs hair are best for oils. Palette knife. Mixing palette: Tear off/ disposable paletts are fine. Cleaning materials: Low oudor thinner (for oils), small jar, kitchen roll, rubbish bag. Canvases: x3 box, board or oil painting paper (recommended) min size: 28x45cm. LOCATION: Drawing Room. The Drawing Room is situated on the ground floor. Accessible parking spaces are available to anyone who requires them.
