COURSE/WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
During this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn technical skills that form the foundation of still life. It offers the opportunity to create works inspired by past masters as well as learning the methods to create your own unique composition. It has been designed for those who are new to still life or looking to improve. Under the tuition of Matt Waruszynski, students will work through a range of studies from various compositions. These will include: – Creating a balanced composition - Colour theory - Tonal values and mark marking - Shape and form There will also be a brief outline of the history of still life and the symbolism of certain objects in the history of art. Matt will give practical demonstrations and then set timed exercises. He will also give one to one advice and feedback. The aim is to encourage each student with their individual approach and to learn how still life is not only a great way to practice but an amazing art form in its own right. The course has been designed primarily with charcoal drawing and oil painting in mind. However if you are more comfortable in other mediums you are more than welcome to use these. Please note you will need to bring your own materials and a document with all the required materials will be provided This workshop is for adults 18+. ABOUT THE TUTOR: Matt Waruszynski is an oil painter based in Northamptonshire. He uses art to explore the relationships we have between people and within ourselves. He also fascinated by the materiality of paint which he likes to apply paint thickly in an impasto style and sees his method as sculpting with paint. With a background in animation, he is drawn to fast, energetic marks to give a sense of life and movement in his work. He has won the Sir Philip Trousdell Prize for Portraiture and was a recent finalist in Raw Umber Studio Image Prize.
